The DEVIL and his DAM.
To the Tune of Bright Cynthia, etc.

The Dam.

I.
GO seduce the Nation
From Prayer and Devotion,
But tell them of God and the Spirit:
Possesse the Religious
With Tenants Prodigious,
That Saints the Earth shall inherit

II.
Put fire in Churches,
Or Schism that worse is,
Let Pulpits thunder Sedition;
Let them humble and Fast
For the Traytors dy'd last,
And stand for Barebones Petition.

III.
Wee'l make them all joyn,
And like Brothers combine
Against Episcopal Power;
By way of Allusion,
Wee'l make a Confusion,
Like that of Babylons Tower.

IIII.
Pater Noster and Creed,
Perswade 'um not read,
If e're you make 'um right Atheists,
And that the two Tables
Of Moses, are Fables,
Now used in Rome by the Papists.

V.
All the Congregations
Of divers perswasions,
Shall hold this fancy to please us:
That 'tis but a Foppery,
And downright Popery
To Bow at the Name of Jesus,

VI.
Should Bishops be settled,
We all should be nettled
With heart-burning Malice forever;
Their Worship is such,
It incourages much
A Sinner, to turn Believer.

The Devil.

I.
THis Lent unexpected,
My steps I directed
To London, and round about there,
To invent some odd Feats,
And infuse a few Cheats,
T' incourage the Factious rout there.

II.
There needed no Scot
To hatch and to Plot,
Myself so soon did engage 'um,
'Gainst Lent and Fish-eating,
That 'twas Popish Cheating,
As nothing could better inrage 'um.

III.
Let th' Orthodox Teach,
And Learned Bishops Preach,
The Sectaries shall out-Pray 'um
With their turn'd up Eyes,
Oh Lords! and their Sighes,
As if they would all-bewray 'um.

IIII.
'Gainst set forms of Prayer,
And Canonical Gear,
Our Whip-Tayl Parson opposes;
Hee'l pull down the Miters,
And set up Presbyters,
Or what his fancy disposes.

V.
There's old Cinque-and-Cater
With's Nutmeg and Grater,
Through age grown feeble and limber,
Yet his Zeal had the grace
To beg Pauls, and imbrace
The Stones, the Lead, and the Timber,

VI.
Such Fellows as these are,
To spight God and Caesar,
Observe no Lent, nor a High-day,
They hold it an honour,
'Gainst Custom and Manner,
To Feast with Flesh on Good-Friday.
