SUsteine, absteine, kepe well in your minde
Beare and forbeare, have ever in remembraunce
For ye shall therby great quietnes finde
In all your life whatsoever doeth chaunce
It is the onely thing that may you avaunce
And make you to be estemed verely
Among all other for the moost happy.
BEare trouble and payne, beare slaunder and blame
Beare wordes displeasaunt, be they never so soure
Forbeare ye in any wise to other to do the same
Forbeare to revenge though it be in your power
Let never your anger remaine with you an howre
Forbeare your owne pleasure beare your neighbors miserye
And you of all other shalbe most happie.
IF ye be gainesaide forbeare for a season
Forbeare to resist when you thinke to offende
Beare others ignoraunce, forbeare your owne reason
Till occasion be geven you them to amende
Then utter your wisedome as God shall it sende
Observe your times, and forbeare discreatly
And ye of all other shal be most happie.
BEare Christes Crosse when it is laide on your backe
That is to saye all maner of adversitie
Which when you in your owne person do lacke
Helpe other to beare that overladen be
Beare with them that beare with all humilitie
So shall this word be verefied accordingly
That ye of all other be the most happie.
Forbeare rashe judgement till the trothe be tryed,
Forbeare all hastines, speake wordes of charitie,
Forbeare extreme punishment, though the fault be spied,
To much in all thinges is counted iniquitie,
Temper your actes with susteine, absteine,
Beare, forbeare, and then shall ye truelye
Of all living creatures be the most happie.
