The Reward of Murther,
In the Execution of Richard Smith, for murther-
ing Mary Davis widdow, to whom hee made a promise of
Marriage after he had gotten her with Childe: she was found drownd
in a Pond neare More Fields, the 27. of November last, and the
said Richard Smith. executed this present Saterday, being
the 12. of Dccember, 1640. for the same fact.
To the tune of, Ned Smith.

ALl men that now are here,
that come to see me die,
See you the Lord doe feare,
and from adulterie flye,

I liv'd in credit good,
I liv'd in wealth and fame,
Till I staind my hands with bloud,
and brought myselfe to shame.

I rob'd her of her breath,
that lov'd me as her life,
I did procure her death,
that should have beene my wife.

Well borne and bred was she,
to many people knowne,
She well affected me,
and loved me alone.

I to requite her love,
did shew myselfe most kinde,
But I at length did proove,
a traitor in my minde.

I for her mony car'd
more then for her God knowes,
As plainely it appear'd,
by giving her some blowes.

Her Chastitie to wrong,
I sought both night and day,
At length my tempting tongue,
made her to goe astray.

I pleaded my owne cause,
that I might have my will,
Against Gods righteous Lawes,
my lust for to fulfill.

When some discourse we had,
as we walkt on the way,
I would seeme wondrous sad,
to heare what she would say.

What ayles my love to be,
so sad and heavy now
This would she say to me,
whilst I with bended brow

Would thus reply againe,
my wants you may supply,
But I shall plead in vaine,
If you my sute deny.

I thinke nothing too deare,
for thee my love said she,
To speake then doe not feare,
for I shall soone agree.
