THE MONUMENT OF
CHARLES THE FIRST,
KING OF ENGLAND.
Who was beheaded before Whit-Hall January 30th 1648.
In the 24th yeare of his Reigne.

Mors mihi Lucrum.

Virtus post Funera vivit.

Here lyes great CHARLES, first King of that same name,
Englands great glory, Englands lasting fame;
A Butcherd Martyr King, whose patient mildnesse,
Crowneth himselfe with Fame, his foes with vildnesse:
A persecuted Saint, for seven yeares space
Prest downe with sorrowes, yet held up by Grace;
In whom those Vertues constantly did live,
Which to the Worthies lasting fame did give:
Patient as Job, and like to Moses, milde,
Salomons wisedome makes him Wisedomes childe;

Valiant as David, and the chiefest part
Like to Josiah, zeale possest his heart:
Faithfull in Vowes, yet there began the strife,
That reavd him of his Queene, his Crowne, his Life:
Whose true Effigies drawne by just desert,
Causeth him live in each true Subjects heart:
Living he dyd, and dying life he gaind,
Death conquerd him, his foes with shame he staind.

FINIS.
